man’s best friend’s gambling problem

http://www.lasvegas.com/pokerblog reports…

in other poker art world news two paintings from artist Cassius Marcellus Coolidge’s 1903 series of dogs playing poker brought a record price of more than ten fold the pre-auction estimated sale price. The New York auction house, Doyle, believed the two paintings, Waterloo:Two and A Bold Bluff, would bring between thirty and fifty thousand dollars. The hammer price was $590,400. The previous record for a Coolidge painting was $74,000. The two paintings went to an unidentified bidder in New York City. Suddenly, you remember that you have one of the reproductions from the Coolidge Dog’s Playing Poker series and you think it might be worth a bundle; so, what do you do? A good starting point would be the official dogs playing poker website. Doyle New York holds an annual “Dogs in Art” auction to coincide with the Westminster Kennel Club dog show.a subsequent auction of coolidge’s lesser-known series cats shitting in a box did not fare as well at the hammer.

safe and sorry

medications are out of dc, recording for dischord, and are a real thrill. check out their song safe and sorry. the very unsafe guitarist is devin ocampo, who i thought i was familiar with back in the late 90s when i worked at perishable records…devin was roped into the small army of musicians that toured as HiM, one of doug scharin‘s (june of ’44) innumerable projects. they were a kind of fusiony proto-antibalas with a monster horn jones. medications sounds nothing like that, and i dig em like potatoes.

farewell mr. denny

martin denny passed away today at the age of 93. a westerner who apropriated gamelan and polynesian musics and forged real connections between eastern and western classicism, denny’s most famous recordings came out in the 1950s and were best known as “stereo demonstration” records. these popular records, showcased ornate and exotic intruments and approaches that were often conspicuous enough to use as vivid examples of the new stereo technology. waved aside by academics, appreciated in his time by mass consumers, adored by chillout djs, indirectly responsible for innumerable tiki-decorated basements and the nauseatingly sweet cocktails served in them. see also: arthur lyman, esquivel, les baxter, ray
