So Long, Black Moses: Isaac Hayes 1943-2008

…a 1973 full-bore, chain-mail performance of “Shaft” in which Jesse Jackson performs the least self-serving act of his televised career.

Once, I might have been bummed out by the fact that a whole generation only knew Hayes as South Park’s Chef.  But Stone and Parker wrote the character with Hayes’ own vibe, so  no foul there.  And his recorded legacy isn’t exactly underwater. Scientology goofiness aside,  there isn’t a place he got to that a songwriter doesn’t want to be.  Later on, soul man.
